Energy Policy. Negotiators have agreed to extend talks a week past today’s deadline in order to complete a landmark accord that would block Iran’s path to nuclear weapons in exchange for sanctions relief. President Obama has stated that he is prepared to walk away from the deal should Tehran fail to accept a tight monitoring regime. WSJ
Energy Outlook. A leading U.S. airline plans to operate a flight from Los Angeles to San Francisco later this summer using fuel generated from farm waste and oils derived from animal fats. The flight is a long-awaited milestone for both the airlines and biofuels industry, as it represents the first time a domestic airline will operate a regular passenger flight using alternative jet fuel. Energy Efficiency. A new study by economists at the University of California, Berkely, and the University of Chicago finds that energy efficiency projects participating in the federal Weatherization Assistance Program — the largest residential energy efficiency program in the U.S. — reduced energy consumption far less than originally predicted. The study concludes that energy efficiency is not necessarily a “win-win” solution for the environment and economy as policymakers often claim, and may result in net costs to society in some policy contexts.
